Infrastructure & Technology

Water

Our village will use a combination of sustainable water collection, conservation, and filtration methods to ensure a reliable supply of clean water while minimizing environmental impact. Below is an outline of our water infrastructure:

Dew Collection Systems

The village will employ innovative dew collection systems. These systems capture atmospheric moisture, particularly during humid nights or early mornings, to provide an additional water source, especially useful during dry seasons or in arid environments. The setup will involve condensation surfaces strategically placed to maximize water capture.

Solar-Powered Tankless Water Heaters

Hot water will be provided through solar-powered tankless water heaters. These heaters use the sun’s energy to provide instant hot water without the need for large, constantly heated tanks. Solar panels will power these systems, making them both efficient and eco-friendly.

Gravity-Powered Sinks and Showers

Wherever possible, gravity-fed systems will be used. These systems store water in elevated tanks, allowing gravity to provide the pressure needed for sinks and showers without any need for pumps or electricity.

Greywater Recycling

Separate pipelines will be installed to capture and direct greywater for treatment.

Foot-Pump Sinks and Showers

To conserve water and encourage more conscious use, foot-pump sinks and foot-pump showers will be installed throughout the village. These systems will:

Rainwater Collection and Filtration

Rainwater will be one of our primary water sources. We’ll implement an advanced rainwater harvesting system, consisting of:

Ground Wells and Live Water

Due to concerns about pollution and varying water table levels, we won’t rely on ground wells or live water sources. While they can be useful in certain regions, we are prioritizing rainwater collection and other above-ground systems to avoid contamination and water shortages. This approach also aligns with our environmental goals by focusing on renewable and clean water resources.

Internet Access

Solar-Powered Communication Hubs

Recent innovations in solar-powered devices have allowed the creation of solar-powered hubs that maintain network connectivity in off-grid environments. These hubs can support satellite or mesh connections, ensuring the village stays online even in power outages.

5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA)

Recent advancements in 5G have made Fixed Wireless Access a reliable option for connecting rural or off-grid areas. If there’s a 5G tower within reach, a 5G receiver can be installed at the village, providing a fast internet connection without the need for traditional wiring. This offers a promising alternative for communities located near urban peripheries.

Outernet (Rebranded as Othernet)

Outernet, now Othernet, offers a satellite-based data delivery system where users can download web content like news, weather, and educational materials. Although it doesn’t provide full internet access, it’s a valuable source of information for off-grid communities, and its availability has improved over the years.

Maidsafe / Safe Network

Maidsafe, also known as the Safe Network, continues to focus on decentralized data storage and browsing. Though it was first proposed in 2014, it’s still in development, aiming to offer a decentralized internet without servers. This is suitable for secure file sharing and communications within your community. However, it’s not yet widely adopted and may be more experimental at this stage.

LoRa (Long Range Radio) Networks

LoRa is a low-power, wide-area network (LPWAN) technology that can send small amounts of data over long distances. It’s useful for sensors and basic communication, especially in off-grid settings. With a LoRa network, devices within a large radius (up to 10 km) can communicate, making it suitable for villages with dispersed residents.

Mesh Networks (Meshnets)

Meshnets are decentralized networks where each device connects directly to nearby devices, creating a resilient web. This allows for communication without the need for traditional internet providers. Popular systems include:

Low-Earth Orbit Satellite Internet

Since 2012, satellite internet has advanced significantly. Services like Starlink and OneWeb provide low-latency internet access using satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). These systems are now far more accessible, offering coverage in remote areas, making them a good option for off-grid living.

Sanitation

The village’s sanitation system will be a blend of advanced technologies and eco-friendly practices, ensuring sustainability, minimal waste, and hygiene.

Incinerating Toilets

We will install Incinolet incinerating toilets, which burn waste into sterile ash without water. These toilets use electric heat to incinerate waste at high temperatures, reducing it to clean, odorless ash that can be disposed of easily. Incinolet units are highly efficient, environmentally friendly, and perfect for remote locations where plumbing infrastructure is not feasible. They save water, eliminate the need for sewage systems, and are low maintenance.

Rotating Composters

In addition to incinerating toilets, the village will use rotating composters for organic waste management. These enclosed systems will break down food scraps, garden waste, and other biodegradable materials, converting them into nutrient-rich compost. The rotating mechanism ensures even decomposition and reduces the need for manual turning, speeding up the composting process.

Greywater Systems

For wastewater from sinks, showers, and washing machines, greywater systems will filter and recycle water for non-potable uses, such as irrigating the village’s gardens. This system will help reduce water waste and maximize resource efficiency.

Composting Dome

The composting dome will serve as a weather-protected structure to house multiple rotating composters, ensuring safe, efficient composting year-round. With adequate ventilation, the dome will manage large-scale organic waste and composting needs, keeping the composters shielded from severe weather while maintaining optimal conditions for decomposition. This setup will be essential for converting organic material into nutrient-rich compost to support the village’s gardens and other agricultural systems.

Electricity

The village will utilize a combination of natural energy technologies, drawing from sustainable and renewable resources to power all essential needs. Our focus will be on:

Wind Power

Small-scale wind turbines may be installed in areas where wind patterns are favorable. This will provide a complementary energy source to solar power, especially during cloudy or windy days.

Geothermal Energy

Geothermal systems will tap into the earth’s natural heat, providing energy for heating and cooling as well as contributing to electricity generation. This source is reliable and environmentally friendly, reducing our reliance on external fuel sources.

Magnetic Generators

Magnetic generators are devices designed to produce electrical power by harnessing the natural repelling and attracting properties of magnets. These systems can provide useful energy, particularly in combination with other renewable sources. While they require a manual push or periodic input to start and maintain motion, they offer a promising low-maintenance method for generating power. Although not completely self-sustaining, magnetic generators can contribute to a hybrid energy solution, working alongside solar or wind to meet the village’s energy needs in a practical and sustainable way.

Solar Power

Solar panels will be installed across rooftops and in designated open areas to harness the sun’s energy. This will provide the village with a consistent and renewable source of electricity during the day. The system will include efficient battery storage solutions to store excess energy for nighttime use.

Zero-Point Energy

Although still in its experimental stages, we are committed to exploring advanced technologies like zero-point energy, which promises to revolutionize the way energy is produced and consumed by tapping into the energy of the vacuum state. If breakthroughs in this field occur, we aim to integrate them into the village’s energy system.

Energy-Efficient Design

Buildings will be designed with passive solar heating, natural ventilation, and insulation that reduces the need for artificial heating and cooling. These architectural choices will optimize energy consumption across the village.

Security

Hügelkultur Walls

Instead of simply building a generic wall to keep the private spaces private and any large predators out, we will construct three, 1.5-meter-tall hügelkultur raised garden beds. One will circle the residential areas, another will circle the entire village, and a third will enclose the nearby dedicated crop field/festival campgrounds.

Keyed Access

Some of the publicly accessible studios will only allow keyed access to the residential side. (the precise implementation for this is open for suggestion and debate)

Suggestions?

Any other necessary security measures (such as for public performances or tours) will be handled at a time when it is more prudent, and there are more individuals to offer their perspective on the matter. That said, if you have any interesting suggestions or ideas, they’re welcome on the discord server.
